Will students at Guildford Grammar School be at a disadvantage for not having used a Windows device?
When reviewing the workplace, a majority of students who will graduate into the workforce in the next 10 years will encounter vastly different computer systems compared to what we are using now. Software evolves rapidly, systems undergo continuous updates, and as outlined in our 2030 GoForward Plan, the school aims to prepare students for an innovative and evolving world, regardless of the platform they use.
How long will they keep the device?
A new device is provided every two years.
Why can't I bring our own device to school?
The school has moved away from a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model in the designated year groups for 2025 with full rollout complete in 2026. The move to school provided devices only allows for full protection and peace of mind for parents around internet filtering/repairs.
What if I buy the same device that you list instead of paying the levy?
The levy includes more than just the device, it also covers IT support, filtering services, software, and Apple Care+. Therefore, the levy is required.
Can I buy the device at the end of the second year?
As the device is part of the school program it needs to be returned and a new device issued.
What happens if I lose the Apple Pencil?
A replacement will be provided and charged to the family's fee account.
Will the iPad Air 13 inch have a keyboard (Years 5,7,9,11)
Yes, it will have a Logitech keyboard as part of the package. This is part of the case to protect the device as well.
Will the iPad Air 11 inch have a keyboard (Year 3)
No, the learning journey in Year 3 is different and so students are not expected to do the same type of work as old year groups. These students will be provided with an Apple Pencil they can use to handwrite on their device.
Can I change the case that comes with the package?
The case is part of the package and contains the keyboard, so students will be required to use the provided case.
Can I put stickers on the case?
Yes, stickers that cause no damage or marks can be applied to the iPad and are in fact encouraged to help with easy identification.
Can I install personal apps onto the school iPad?
If specific software is required for a student's educational needs, we can evaluate these cases. Personal apps cannot be loaded onto school devices.
Can I install monitoring software onto the iPad?
The iPad will come with school monitoring software. Other monitoring software cannot be added. However, if situations occur that require intervention, support will be provided through various methods at the school.
Isn't the iPad just for games/entertainment?
It is true that the iPad is excellent for games and entertainment, however, those same features actually make it the ideal learning device for classrooms. They are powerful for multimedia, they have built in cameras, they allow for a range of inputs. It should be noted that if the program was for laptops, the ability to use the device for games/entertainment would be the same.
Can I elect to leave the device at school?
The device needs to go home at night and be safely charged ready for school the next day. For parents with concerns please reach out to the team here at Guildford Grammar School.
How much do I get charged for repairs?
The school pays for AppleCare+ for all devices to reduce the cost to parents. Charges depend on the amount of damage. You can find the cost of repairs provided under this coverage here under service fees half way down the page - https://www.apple.com/au/support/products/ipad/
If a device is broken it is replaced with a device the same day and as all content is being backed up to the cloud through OneDrive and iCloud
Do I need to purchase insurance?
The school insurance will be used in the event of lost or stolen devices with parents charged an excess of $500, which applies with a police report required. Full replacement cost applies to subsequent claims within a two-year rotation.
Why can't I get the device repaired myself?
Repairs are carried out on-site by our Apple Certified onsite technician. Your child’s device has AppleCare+ coverage which allows for unlimited incidents of accidental damage; each repair is subject to an AppleCare+ fee. This allows us to instantly swap out a damaged device, with no down time.
What happens if I break to Logitech Keyboard?
The keyboard is a separate accessory and is not covered under apple care plus. If it is broken (water damage, cracked track pad other catastrophic damage, then a full replacement of the keyboard is required. An assessment will be done on the keyboard at the Tech Centre and you will be notified.
If my child leaves the school do I get a refund or get to keep the device?
The device is part of the school levy and that is a non refundable fee paid by all parents at the beginning of the year. The device needs to be returned on the last day students exist the school.
