Enlistment
- Department of Veterans' Affairs. (2023, August 30). Enlisting in the Australian forces during World War I. https://anzacportal.dva.gov.au/wars-and-missions/ww1/military-organisation/enlistmentAn Australian law prevented men from serving in the war without first voluntarily joining a special military force. At first, many Australians wanted to join the war effort. But the number of enlistments dropped off during the war. The population of willing men had all joined by the end of 1915. Long lists of deaths reported in daily newspapers probably added to the low recruitment.

Australian Indigenous service during World War I. https://anzacportal.dva.gov.au/wars-and-missions/ww1/personnel/indigenous-serviceMany Indigenous Australians served overseas during World War I. At first, racist regulations prevented them from joining the army. Restrictions were relaxed in 1917 because the British Empire needed reinforcements.

Australians in World War 1
- Westerman, W. (2016, March 2). Warfare 1914-1918 (Australia). https://encyclopedia.1914-1918-online.net/article/warfare-1914-1918-australia/#toc_1916Although popular memory in Australia places a large emphasis on the Gallipoli campaign in the history of the First World War, the Australian military contribution was much more extensive than one nine-month campaign in 1915. Australian divisions fought with distinction on the Western Front from 1916 onwards and particularly in 1918. Australian mounted troops also played an important part in the Sinai and Palestine campaigns.
